Thread: Planting Ginseng

    Default Planting Ginseng

I was wondering if you guys planted the seeds back where you pick ginseng? Or if you sell them, or what?

My dad got a handful of seeds about 10 years ago from a guy, and planted them in some pretty ideal spots out in the woods. He checked the next year, and didn't see anything, so he assumed it was a bust. However, he didn't know that ginseng doesn't normally come up the next spring, but takes 18 months to germinate.

We went out and checked the places he had planted them a week or so ago, and there are some pretty healthy ginseng patches. I am not up to date on wild root prices, and don't have intentions of selling a lot...but I have thought about ordering some seeds and getting some larger patches underway.

I know the 'hunt' is what's it's about to a real 'sang digger'...but I was wondering if anyone else had had similar experiences.

Haha...hope everyone is having a great day!

It is usually best to plant the seeds in the same areas that you find wild ginseng. The dry root price has been in the $350-$400/lb range the last few years.
