Update!!
Good Morning! I thought I would add an update for anyone out there who still checks for updates.Cory will be going back in for surgery early tomorrow morning. He is still fighting infections in his legs, and we have gotten to the point where we need to be aggressive. So, they will be taking out the hardware in his right leg, cleaning out the infection and inserting an antibiotic rod. This rod will stay in his leg for 6-8 weeks. While this rod is in he will not be able to bear any weight on his right leg. He is very sad because he has become accustomed to standing and doing some walking with his walker. He will also be on IV antibiotics during those 6-8 weeks.
After the 6-8 weeks they will take out the antibiotic rod and put in a more permanent rod and screws. They will also scrap the break in his leg to try promote some healing to start.
His left leg has some healing going on, but the ankle on his left foot is still a mess with lots of little bone fragments. They will address this ankle once his right leg is doing better. He continues to have alot of nerve pain which they say will be there for a long time.
Surgery went well yesterday. It lasted about 3 hours and his doctor was pleased. The infection did go down into the leg and into the hardware, which was unknown before the surgery. They took cultures and some tissue samples to make sure they can treat the infection correctly.
Cory gets to keep the rod and the screws they took out his leg, so he was pretty excited about that. They did get the antibiotic rod placed in his leg, so he was in quite a bit of pain, but they are finally getting his pain management under control.
His picc line was placed today for the IV antibiotics. Homecare will start when we get home and they will teach me how to administer the IV meds. We are hopefully planning on going home Friday as long as he can transfer into his wheelchair with my help so he can somewhat maneuver around the house.
