Does anyone eat pike? I know alot of people pickle them but i had a few buddies tell me u can fillet the Y bone out. I personally havnt tried this. I havnt caught much other than a few hammer handles. But since i got only one deer this year it wld be nice to have some fresh fish even if it a northern. Anyone fillet them and eat them?

You bet!! I always cut the yellow belly meat out of the fillet. You can take the y bones out too If the northern is big enough. The bigger the northern the better I can get the y bones out. I'm not too good at taking the y bones out being I just started doing this with In the last 2 years but I'm getting better.

Simple easy way to fillet a northern, 1st cut behind the head cut down untill you hit the back bone, follow that bone back with the knife untill you come to the fin in the back 1/3rd of the fish, save that boneless piece. With this top filet removed scrape the blood away and you can see those y bones from the top simply cut on the outside of those bones follow them in with the knife and bingo boneless northern fillets 3 of them from each fish. I will throw northerns back in the summer but thru the ice, they are wonderful.

10 point is right one, although you will have to see it done to know what he is talking about. The only thing I would add is don't go all the way to the spine on the first cut, you tend to cut the tops of the y bones into the fillet, about half way down is sufficient to see the rows of the bones. In the summer as well they are excellent, put them on ice overnight or in a bag in the fridge and then clean them, they are among the best, and microwave all fish is good. Lay the fillets on saran wrap with seasoning, butter, and lemon juice, wrap it up, nuke it till flakey white. Takes only a few minutes and tastes great, gotta get the fillets sparkly clean though before cooking.

If you catch enough pike keep those back steaks seperate and cook them all at once it is some of the best, fresh not frozen is best. It is yellow gold when it is cooked.

The best way that I have found for cooking pike is to cut the meat into smaller cubes and then boil it. Dip it in butter and then imagine that you're eating crab or lobster
