I have 3 small plots tilled and ready to plant. I am thinking of putting a fence around the plots till they grow enough, and then I was thinking why not keep the plots fenced in till season opens? I think it might make the plots even more effective.

What kind of fence?
I was thinking t posts and cheap plastic snow fence. I know the deer can jump it it would be a mild determent.
That might work...Especially in the summer, when they have other food options?
Let us know how it goes. I would be curious!
I was curious about doing the same thing last year, but decided not to for a few reasons:
1) My plots were large enough (one is an acre, the other is about 1/4 acre) that I didnt think the deer could eat them off fast enough to worry about it, and they couldnt..especially the first year when they didnt know they were there yet...
and 2) Deer prefer different plants at different times of the year, so in july, they may only be hitting one or two types of plants in your plots (if your plots are a mixture of different plants), which allows the others to grow..
I have never thought about fencing it off to keep the deer out til just before the season opens, but IMO (and I could be way off on this), you want the deer to know your plots are there, and want them to start eating there and becoming comfortable eating/grazing there...If they all get used to eating in the neighbors field, guess where they are gonna be in the early season...I want as much action as I can get around my plots all season long, as it also serves as a valuable scouting tool for what deer are in the area...

My thoughts are that your fence efforts would be futile unless you went with a solar or battery powered high, electric fence. I think the previously mentioned strategy of having a variety of offerings would be best unless you are willing to put the extra time and resources into an electric fence.
