Default Worked up a plot today...

I decided to keep an ace in the hole this year. Always a good idea in wolf country. I've been planting food plots on my property for a few years now with great results. Awesome bucks, awesome video and awesome pictures but I just never hunt the area. I have a lot of other land that I would rather hunt. This is my property just behind my house and with the bucks that have been in the area the last few years I figured I could sweeten up a spot back off the logging road plots. I sprayed it twice in the last month and everything died and I mean everything. I mowed it first then let it come back up before I sprayed the first time. The second spray was just for good measure, probably not needed. I went to the feed mill today and had them mix me up my favorite recipe; ladino clover, white clover, chicory and purple top turnips. Also grabbed a bag of 17-17-17 fertilizer. Decided not to lime again this year. Last year this was rapeseed and it got out of hand. Stuff was 5 feet tall or better where I didn't cut it and let the clover come back. The clover incidentally is the hardest thing to kill off before planting. I rented a walk behind tiller because it's just easier than the disc to turn around in some spots and there was a fair amount of grass that the tiller seems to chop up better than discing.

The nice thing about this mixture is it will all come in this year but the clover and chicory will return next year so all I have to do next year at this spot is mow it:thumbs_up

Took a few before pics. I got a late start this afternoon and didn't get going until about 4:00pm. I did manage to get it all tilled up, seeded, fertilized and packed. It's just a section of my backyard plot network but it's the only section with a stand location.

I will post up some after pics tomorrow, it was getting dark when I was packing the soil and the skeeters were way crazy so I'm waiting until tomorrow to get the finished pics. This is one of my favorite little plots tucked away as a just in case hunting spot.

It's a small plot, I figured it at just over 5,600 square feet.

    My backyard...

They plots start on old logging roads on both end corners...

This is the one we'll be heading down today. You can see where I killed off the existing growth in the distance...

The existing clover that I planted a few years ago. I've mowed it twice already this spring. I'm going to wait until it fully flowers before I mow it again, which won't be long...

Coming up to the kill zone, the stuff worked just great this year.

My mineral stump that is on the edge of the plot, daytime video and IR cam in place.... I chainsawed slots in the stump years ago to allow the salt to penetrate the stump. The deer love this thing...

Hauling in the tiller with the old Chevy, she doesn't see much action anymore. Pretty much all hunting related stuff now...

Some photo's of what it looks now. I ran the tiller over it a couple times and planted/fertilized, then packed it. There is some rain in the forecast which would be perfect right now. The soil is good in there and if the past is any indication, this plot should grow well

Already had a few deer tracks on plot from last night, I didn't check the cams though. I wasn't armed for battle with the skeeters so I just took the shots and ran :^O

My seed mixture is a 1/4lb. each of the ladino, white, chicory and turnip. So it was only two pounds of seed for this plot. It doesn't seem like much when you're spreading it but when planting turnips it's easy to over seed and you end up with little tiny radish size veggies.

I put more time than I wanted to into this one so I'm pretty excited to see how it grows.

Some updated pics of my clover, chicory and turnip plot behind the house. We've had a ton of rain and perfect conditions for growing. Even my yard looks good this summer, it can dry up and get brown pretty quick in the summer months.

The old roads are clover and chicory from previous years, I've just been mowing them this year.

The turnip plants are 6" high after only 3 weeks. Should be a great plot.
