Thread: What do you like in a hunting TV show/ DVD?

  1. #1

Question What do you like in a hunting TV show/ DVD?

Ok so I am in the process of getting my editing software figured out and started.

So I just want to know what you all like in a hunting show and or DVD. Also what are some things that you don't like?

I know some of you don't like a lot of the stuff out there but there has to be some stuff you like. And I'm pretty sure I have posted something like this in the past but it is time to bring it up again. Thanks for any and all replies!

Not that score matters, but you hardly ever see any of the videos saying the score of the buck. I always like to guess and see how close I was.

15 camera angles. I know this is probably a personal thing, but all those camera angles means it probably took 10-1 times the b roll footage to shoot the whole hunt than what actually took place in the field. To me it all just gives it a fake feel.

i like the one extra camera angle, set a small camera in the tree or blind with ya'll and show the hunter and what he actually does in the stand when the deer or turkey comes in. you might get lucky and get the animal in the backround!

    Interesting question, Pick!

I guess I like to be entertained and informed. I like a story line to the hunt...You know, what's the setup, why you're there, any special tactics, etc. I just like to know something about the hunt and not just see a kill.

I also appreciate good camera work. Sharp focus, steady framing and stuff like that. To me that's what separates a so-so video from a great one. I like to feel like the cameraman paid attention to stuff and worked hard. I can't stand shaky footage unless I know there was a reason for it.

Probably too much information! I have been watching these things for too many years I guess!

I believe Grasshopper has hit the nail on the head with his info. That is everything I look for in a Hunting video. Way to go Grasshopper and good luck Pickert with making yours.

Not sure why, and maybe its just me, but I like the clips of in the truck heading out to the spot, or driving on a trip..there is something about it that makes it more interesting and fun than turning the camera on in the stand and saying "ok we're here in the stand/blind"..

The first 20 seconds of this video is what Im talking about:

I'm going to bump this back up again.

So what are some of the TV shows out there that you really like? What is it that makes you like that show? Even though you like that show is there anything that you would change about it if you could?

Input on the DVD side is still being listened to also so feel free to talk about both.

Thanks again to all of you that posted before. All of your comments are noted and I will remember what everyone likes or does not like.

    Thanks

Which TV show do I like? IMO, the best show on tv is heartland bowhunter..its hard to explain what makes it so good, but there is just something about the filming that tops every other show. I also like the different amount of stuff they hunt..muleys, whitetails, geese, bears, one episode showed them putting in their food plots and hanging some stands, one showed them doing some shed hunting..

Im not sure if I can think of anything that would improve that show..

i agree with cornfedkiller heartland bowhunting is amazing i love how the go pheasent hunting with recurves, they kinda mix it up with all the big game and they show QDM just one kind of show that you can't get enough.

HB is the only DVD/show I have watched end-to-end.
I REALLY get sick of the 15 minutes of whispering back and forth etc....
The other thing I really dislike is that they are SOOO setup...
Really you put out corn in a high fence with a managed herd and you pick out a buck......and then they tell us how great a hunt it was?
Not real nor obtainable for most of us avg. Joe hunters.

I would to see honesty, I understand the pressures of making a show but how about a disclaimer if it's a high fence or ranch. I would watch a show were guys busted their humps and didn't get a shot vs a high fence and a happy ending every show, it's so predictable like a Chuck Norris spin kick on Walker Texas Ranger. Lets see how it works on public land high pressure.
