Thread: Doe Managment

  1. Default Doe Managment

What is everyones view on doe management as far as when is the best time to get it done? Early season, Late season or all year?

My personal opinion, if possible id like to shoot my does early season. That way if a good buck has spread his genes during the rut, u dnt kill off his offspring before they get that chance to live. But dont get me wrong if i havnt had any luck i will shoot them whenever but if i can i like to do it early.
Fire up the grill cuz bowhuntin isn't catch and release!

I will shoot a good doe anytime of the season, I do only look for mature does that dont have any fawns with them or look for a long nosed, grey face nanny I do however this year need to take at least 1 or 2 out of the property im am hunting this fall, I've counted 9-11 does all with twin fawns this summer on a 260 acre farm

I will shoot them anytime I get the chance just because I don't get that many chances at one. But I know plenty of guys that shoot them early and also know guys that won't shoot them till late season. Why shoot the live bait? I can't disagree one bit.

I try to do it early. Like NE WI said earlier, if you shoot them pre rut you dont kill does that have been bred already.

9-11 with twins on 269 acres? I wish I had such luxury, then I wouldn't have to worry about my crops getting eaten so damn much. I counted 8 last night, 6 of which had twins, all in one 13 acre field behind my house. There were also 3 150"+ bucks in that same field. That's 13 acres of over 200, not counting the neighboring farms

Depends on the property and emptiness of my freezer!

In areas where they need lots of killin', better to start rackin' em up early before they know what's up. Those old girls get pretty smart by gun season.

I always save a tag or two for late season though...I just love hunting that time of year

I too, try to pick a bigger, smarter doe with or without fawns, or will settle for a average doe is she doesn't have fawns. Depends on my stands, if I am in a easy stand where I know where they are gonna go once hit and recovery is easy and not going to stir up the whole county, I will take her. Otherwise, I let them go for another day. Don't matter what time of year.

I know! Everytime I leave or come home no matter what time of day I see a doe or a fawn somewhere There's about a 500X100 yard hayfield along the road where on any given evening there will be 3 does all with twin fawns and 2-3 small bucks. The big boys don't go into this part of the property till pre-rut so that right there is where a nanny or two might take her last bites of alfalfa!!!!

I would be more than happy to help you out with the problem you're having with too many deer. Drop me a line if you're really serious about getting rid of them...

I dunno, I mean our party takes about 30 per year during the second season and early antlerless. During the first season the one neighboring party takes a dozen, another neighboring party takes 20-30, and the other two sides take 5-10 each. What would really help is if the people in the next valley wouldn't be so worried about people shooting "their" buck, and would let people come in and shoot some does. It is impossible to keep up when there are a bunch of groups around you that either don't agree with hunting at all, or won't let people shoot some does.

The two major landowners near us like that own over 3000 acres combined, and I'd say less than 5 deer are taken per year from there.

In other words, we do our part, it's the anti's and trophy hunters that are the problem. And they won't change their ways no matter how hard I try.

I shoot them year around!! Obviously more in the late season due to them hearding up. When it is nothing to 30-40 in a field any given night, its hard not to start shooting.

Stump the less live bait you have running around the better your fake bait has at working. You cant predict live bait but you can predict fake bait, that it will be 20-30 yrds from your stand and never move

So I whack everyone if they come within range, especially if it is a mamma with fawns.....shoot the mamma first then take out the fawns when they come back to see what happened to mamma. Sounds cruel, but a doe is a doe i.m.o.
Aw yes...its almost that time of year!!
