Iowa Public land
Im moving to the Des Moines area this weekend to go back to college. Just kinda curious if any of know of any decent public land in that area? im not asking to give away your hot spots just trying to get an idea on how the hunting is in that area. Is should be awesome, after all it is Iowa land of the giants right?!? lol

You'll want to head south from Des Moines. Anywhere from 30 miles south to the Missouri border is going to be your best bet. I would imagine that most public land in that area should be good.

Iowas Division of wildlife has a GREAT map of public land with borders highlighted. That will be your best source of info for public land.

Another great resource is The Iowa Sportsman's Atlas. Very detailed maps with county roads marked well, and public areas described for each county.
Not all public areas are created equal, but I have hunted Iowa quite a bit as a resident and nonresident, and if all I could hunt were public, it wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit...

thanks for info guys! i appreciate it! i actually bought an Iowa Sportsman Atlas and have been checking out a few spots. also put my camera out and got a couple pics of some decent bucks! good luck this fall guys!!
