    Default Buying trees/shrubs for property

Does anyone have any suggestions in regards to where to be tree & shrub seedlings for planting next spring? I know the Mn DNR sells stock seedlings.

My goal is food & cover for mainly deer, but also turkeys. Any suggestions as to what trees should be purchased, what shrubs and bushes?

The DNR does offer seedlings and they are quality trees. They do offer a wildlife package that has several different varities of trees and shrubs. I would plant red dogwood shrubs, some sort of willow shrub. I prefer diamond willow but the DNR does not offer diamond willow. I would also plant some fruit trees apple and pear. I would also suggest white pine and white cedar but good luck getting those trees to grow from seedling the deer brouse them so bad it's tough to get them to grow. When planting trees and shrubs do your research into your soil type and soil moisture, you can plant all the best trees and shrubs but if you plant them in the wrong soil they will never prosper. I commend you on your long term approach with planting trees and shrubs, in the long run it will improve your land and hunting. So many hunters just want to throw in a food plot and expect the deer to line up and wait to be hunted while their racks grow.

It depends what you looking for. Are you looking for a fast growing tree. One that has great cover? One with acorns, pines?

if you want mass quanities of the same trees then MN DNR is your place.
if you want a great selection in smaller bundles for a great price then your county soil & water conservation office is your place.
I dont know if every county has this tree sale but north of TC they do. they start taking orders early winter into early spring & the trees arrive springtime (april or may ?) if you didnt place a order then you still might have a chance to pick some bundles up but the ammount & choices are limited cuz you didnt order.

white pine - fast grower & provide shelter or roosting spots for wildlife
hazelnut - everything likes them! & will grow in MN & offered from soil/water.
poplars - fast growers & offer great browse
american plum - decent growers & provide fruit within reasonable time.
    red sumac
    red dogwood
oaks are a waste of your time unless you're planting them for future generations.
theres more but I'm drawing a blank right now. it really depends on your soil as to what you can plant.

Check out my post in "Apples?" thread as well. My short response here is get some crabapple trees through SWCD and highbush cranberry if you can find them. Then use Plantra tree tubes and put good cages around the bushes.
