    Default Hen of the woods

Any of you guys pick Hen of the woods? If so what have you done to preserve? Freeze, dehydrate or just eat it as soon as you get it? Also picked some Sulfer shelf/ chicken of the woods. Both are pretty tasty.

I have not a clue what the hell you are even talking about...I think you've been smoking too much of it and not preserving or whatever enough of it.....Just kidding bud, I will watch this thread to learn something though!

The only ones I have picked haven't made it past the first fry pan

I do hear that drying them is a good way to keep em, if you're not a pig like me!

Can someone post some pictures of them? I'm pretty sure we have them on our land, but have no idea what they look like or even how to start looking for them. Any pointers would be helpful.

Hen of the woods are found generally near (with in a couple feet) dead or dying oaks. I have better luck finding them around old growth oaks with not alot of sun light. Like Grasshopper I have a hard time not eating them right away. Chicken of the woods (sulfer shelf) are pretty hard to miss. They are usually orange on top and yellow underneath and on the sides of dead or dying trees. If you haven't tried them before read up on them and take it slow. There are alot of mushrooms that grow well on B.S. so if you follow Billiard around you should be able to pick a ton of them.

Just had me some sulfur shelfs tonite. Got enough for breakfast too. Probably the freshest i've ever found. Checking bear baits, they weren't there yesterday, there today. Never tried the hen of the woods, my step dad says they're fenominal. Trumpeter mushrooms are very good, grow this time of year.

When my pa has done it in the past, he soaks the mushrooms for about a day to get rid of any bugs and dirt. Then he cuts it up and puts it on our dehydrator. Best recipe was when he put them in our spaghetti! Amazing

That sounds good. I just cooked up some shaggy mane mushrooms. They are also pretty tasty.

I got my first taste of a Hen of the Woods mushroom this week (thanks to Nitemare). Luckily for me he dont like mushrooms. They were fenominal. By far my favorite so far. I also was fortunate to find some oyster mushrooms this week. They are right up there on my list too. Kind of rare for this time of year, usually follow the morrels in the spring.
