If you want to catch smallmouth look for flowing water, always troll a crank bait when you a moving and bring bug spray.

Yah this is my second year going and we had pretty good luck last year but that was on temperance lake and brule lake and echo lake, and bug spray will be a priority for us thanks for the info.

I have fished the Kawishiwe river on several times. Never entered on the lake. Leeches are a must. Babes bait in Ely has about the best bait for the money. Small black jigs tipped with a leech is killer. Went up through Fall lake last year and we caught over 50 smallmouth in the 2 to 5lb range in 2 days. Any spot with some current or back bays with stumps, logs or rocks are the best. Spinner baits in the weedy bays for Northern work well. My son and I caught just over 30 northerns in a couple hours. Nothing over 5 lbs but they are a blast to catch at any size. Good luck. I am going on Basswood in late June. Can't wait.

I spent three weeks moose hunting that area. It's been awhile, unfortunately...Dang, just seeing those names made me miss that place.

Sounds like you guys did some damage up there when it came to fishing, and thanks for the info, I would be pumped if we had some action like that, but either way it is just fun and relaxing being up there.

I have always thought that if I ever go again I would bring a minnow trap, would love to fish with a shiner and a slip bobber up there. If I had to reccomend a lure I would use either a deep diving or medium diving Rapala Husky jerk in either the clown or perch pattern.
