I no longer use the shooting rail as I am switching over to ladder stands with the attached rail on them. This is good for fixed stands or a ladder stand that does not have a rail on it already.
The shooting rail has a padded back rest and padded front and 3/4 the way up the side rails. It attaches to the tree with a ratchet strap that is included. I have always taken the rail down after the season is done so it's not in the elements year round.
Edit: I forgot to mention the rail swings up so it makes getting in/out of stand easier.
