What is up with hunting one weekend and the season closes for the week then opens again?

I think it's because U.S. fish and wildlife only alow a 60 day duck season. It opens a week earlier, but in order to have the best of both worlds so to speak it has to close for 5 days. This inables the season to run up to Thanksgiving weekend, which is susposed give us a good shot at some late season hunting. This is my understanding anyway. A good late season hunt is awesome if it happens. I think the last decent one I had was probably close to 10 years ago. That last big push of ducks only seems to exist as a distant memory of hunts gone by. Geese are a different story, so most of my waterfowl hunting has been focused on them the past few years.
