    Default Rattling and scrapes

Is it to early to start doing light rattling and putting down some scapes and putting a dripper over them?

If it is when should you think about starting to use these tactics?

I am by no means and expert, but a friend of mine, once he finds a scrape, pisses on it every time he walks by it or checks his camera (if it is over it). I tried it on Sunday when I hung my camera in a new spot. I used my dirty boot that I wore cutting wood and made a "scrape", I broke over a "licking branch" and pissed where the ground was bare. I hunted that farm last night so I pulled the card and pissed on the "scrape" again. When I checked the card I had 7 different bucks activley using that scrape in just two nights. I don't think it is too early.

Guys have been in scrapes for years and it no doubt works. Don't be scared to give it a try. There are some that will go to the extent of taking the dirt from a scrape(wearing rubber gloves so you don't get your scent on the dirt) in a completely different area and taking it to another farm to "refreshen" a scrape of which I've read works as well. I guess if you have plenty of time on your hands, might be something to do as well.

I have heard of people pissing in scrapes. I dont think I could bring myself to piss all over my hunting ground though...you would think a mature animal would be somewhat alerted to the difference in smell between human urine & deer urine.

Ive cut one in a scrape or two also...never amounted to much other than some great pictures at 2 in the morning.

As far as rattling goes, I recently found a website that shows a graph of the appropriate/effective times to call/rattle (I will try to get a link up) but it showed rattling was most effective from the start of October, and tapering off as November rolls around. I personally always thought it was best during the 'rut', or first week or two of November...but apparently not.

I will try me some rattling this weekend for sure.

p.s. he mentioned in the article that aggressive rattling wasnt very effective at this time, as most bucks are still sparring, not full out brawling.

    Ok thanks for that
Here is another question to the scrape idea
If you are making a mock scrape, what do you do about a licking branch
do you have to snap one so it hangs down or find a branch that is low enough

pull one down and tie it off with some wire or high strength fishing line...if the branch is broken/dead, the bucks wont use it.

I made three mock scrapes on friday and actually freshened one up myself and watch a little buck come up to it
rub his head on a banch and maybe freshen it up to he did not scrape at it
but the human smell did not seem to startle him
he hung out for about 40 minutes, just a 6 point

I have been making mock scrapes for a long time and I always break licking branches on every one. If there aren't any that I think the deer can reach, I find a big branch and lay it on the ground next to it with some of the smaller branches about chest high on a deer. I have great luck with deer using my scrapes and most of the time the big bucks will tear them up and then make another scrape of their own very close by.
