    Default mn hunters vent.

Ok i cant figure it out. I have heard people complain about not seeing any big bucks. Then you see there pictures of small bucks. I want to tell them that is why your shooting all the small bucks.
I went on facebook and all the pictures i see are dinkers, in the paper they have a artical about deer numbers down with a picture of a dinker. How do people expect to get bigger deer when there shooting all the dinker bucks.
    Sorry for the vent.

Not to cause any troubles, but you still get more meat off a yearlong buck than most does. if you are a meat hunter the 4 point restriction is ridiculous. I was out this weekend and all I saw were illegal bucks that were to small. no does, no mature bucks. If I could have shot any of these I would've for the meat.

Still if you a meat hunter why not shoot a doe there is way to many of them. Let the bucks grow shoot a doe.

Normally I'd agree with you, however this year out of everyone that I know who hunts, none of us are even seeing the does out there like we used to. The way it looks around some of the areas I've been hunting for years we're better off dropping a few spikes and leaving the does alone to breed and hopefully raise the number of deers a bit.

Agreed, out of the 4 of us hunting this weekend we only saw 1 legal buck (a yearling 8) and a couple fawns. The rest were illegal bucks. Spikes up to a 5 pointer. Normal years we would have seen several does by now

Yes you may have only seen one legal buck that may be because it is the first few years of this point restriction, and everyone shot all the bucks before so now they need a few years to get big. Point restriction dont fix everything in the first year it takes a few years.

This is a pretty funny vent you started here. I see in the archery scorecard that you shot yourself a knot head. Pretty sure that's a dinker buck. just sayin.

I just about spit pop all over my laptop laughing! I need a little advanced warning before a BUSTED like this take place.

Not trying to be an ass but this is one example of where "think of my previous posts before I speak as they may bite me later" comes into play. Every hunter out there has shot a spike, knob buck, fork, or other smaller buck at one point in their lives including me this year. Sometimes you can do all the QDM stuff you want and you still won't have any bigger bucks out of it when you have neighbors who will shoot everything that walks.

Example: My cousin passed a fork Saturday afternoon. He watched it cross over our trail connecting to the neighbors land and walk within 100 yards of one of their stands. My cousin watched the buck he wanted to let grow die that day.

It was sick, And had something very wrong with it. And when you see a thing on its chest swinging back and forth and hits its legs every step you would know what i mean. After i called the DNR they said it was a good thing the virus runs in the dna.

This is why i would like the state to have state wide restrictions. It would make this state a more trophy state like others.
Look at PA they did the restrictions and people hated it till they saw the bigger bucks it produced.

I am betting you shot it then found the growth afterwards

Either way who honestly cares. While I normally prefer to hunt bigger bucks, I too will shoot something smaller if I'm on a meat hunt for the season. Plus who am I to say what a trophy deer is to you or anyone else? While I've been lucky enough to see a lot of quality bucks in my lifetime, I know of a lot more who have never seen a 140" buck in all of their time in the woods, and some of them have been hunting over 10 years. Some areas just have crappy genetics along with poor food sources. Should we also mandate a food plot for every section of land too just to ensure the deer have food available to allow for better growth?

I hunt on a 5,000+ acre section of land in Northern Minnesota every once in a while just because I like the idea of camping and hunting in the middle of nowhere, and very rarely ever even see another hunter while I am out there other than whoever is with me. I have hunted this same land at least a few times a year every year for about the last 20 years. I can honestly say that I've NEVER seen a buck over 120" on that section of land, and it's not because a lot of other hunters are shooting everything that walks by. It's because the wolves are doing serious damage on top of the bad genetics and lack of food/minerals in the area to help with their growth.

I thought the topic was "mn hunters vent"? I think we were on topic the entire time as everyone was venting. Just saying...

Ok for seeing Can you tell a differnance between a year and a half 4 point and a 3.5 year 8 point. That is how easy it was to notice that growth. I could see it from 100 yards away when the deer was walking towards me and when it was at 17 yards it looked huge.

Do you have restrictions over there or just have everyone shooting dinkers?
