    Default Late Season Death Match

We got some unfortunate news yesterday near one of our farms. Two bucks got into a nasty scrap that killed one of them. Neighbors near our farm heard two bucks fighting on Saturday night.

Neighbors near one of our properties heard two bucks fighting on Saturday night and after investigating the scene, found the two locked together. Both bucks were initially alive but after continued fighting, the smaller of the two bucks gained some leverage, and putting his body into one violent thrash, killed the larger buck.

With the larger of the two already expired, it still took two hours for the survivor to tire before it was safe to unlock the two racks--which required the use of a crow bar.

Fortunately, the smaller buck walked away from the incident relatively unscathed. However, due to the great deal of physical stress the smaller buck undoubtedly endured, only time will tell if he will see another year on the farm.

Very unfortunate as they both survived the archery and gun seasons and the larger buck was in a good position to easily gross Boone next year.

After investigating further, the landowners traced the fight back around 400 yards from the spot where the larger buck was killed. After freeing the smaller buck, it took him some time for him to regain enough strength to leave and giving him a conservative cushion, the landowners then tracked the buck to the edge of our property. We'll be putting out trail cams in earnest around the farm here shortly to see if he survives (although once he drops the headgear, we'll have to wait until next summer to see if he did, indeed, make it.)

Odd that bucks would be fighting at this time of the year to that degree. Too bad the bigger buck didn't make it another season.

I'm assuming they locked up early on but from what I've seen on our properties, more bucks are holding onto their antlers more at this time than in the past few colder/snowier winters. Holding on the the headgear lets them enjoy higher levels of testosterone a bit longer and may be the reason we saw this. Still the last thing you'd expect to see in late January, though!

    Default That is too bad.

Too bad that bigger one had to go like that. Would have been a dandy to put on the wall. The younger one looks like he could be a good one next year if he makes it.

    Thanks for sharing!

That is a bummer man. I bet that other buck will be lucky to make it.....sure hope he does for your sake.

Looks like the younger one's made it for the time being. Pretty sure he dropped both sides last night--will post pics if we find them this weekend.

We were able to get footage of the fight from the landowners who separated the two animals--this footage is in the second half of this week's webisode.
